When It Snows, It Pours – Accelerate Snowflake Cloud Data Warehouse

It’s snowing everywhere! Even though it’s almost spring, big beautiful snowflakes are swirling about everywhere! Are you seeing flurries outside your window?

If you’re like other customers, Snowflake may be at the center of your new cloud analytics initiatives. Customers select Snowflake for its modern, built-for-the-cloud SQL data warehouse, zero management and ‘pay only for what you need’ capabilities. It’s no wonder we are experiencing such a snow blizzard!

Cloud Data Warehouse: Three Ways

Here at Informatica, we are seeing patterns emerge in our customers’ adoption of Snowflake cloud data warehouse

1. Migration

The migration adoption pattern currently appears to be the most prevalent among our customers, considering Snowflake. You are probably now thinking about migration from the on-premises traditional enterprise data warehouses to Snowflake. Certainly, there’s a lot of that going on. Interestingly, we are also seeing a fair amount of migrations from other cloud data warehouses and from Hadoop implementations to Snowflake.

One of our customers in the MarTech space, who recently went public, was an early adopter of the cloud data warehouse concept several years back. Recently, they’ve decided to switch to Snowflake. Of course, as you may have guessed, many of our customers are migrating their on-premises enterprise data warehouses—lock, stock and barrel—to a Snowflake cloud data warehouse. One of Informatica’s largest long-time customers, a leader in the sports apparel arena, has recently finished migrating their entire on-premises enterprise data warehouse to Snowflake.

2. Extension

Extension is another common adoption pattern, being pursued by customers, who are choosing to selectively implement new or strategic analytics initiatives in the cloud. Usually, they have their sights on ultimately moving their entire architecture to the cloud. However, they take more of a hybrid, phased approach, investing first in moving to cloud new analytical use cases that involve high data volumes, such as IoT or social data. Or focusing first on strategic use cases that are exhibiting slow processing time and high costs, when using their traditional on-premises data warehouse. Over time, as they move more and more of their environment to cloud, they will end up retiring their legacy data warehouse.

For example, another Informatica enterprise customer in the financial services space is gradually moving their data warehousing environment from multiple on-premises data warehouses to a cloud analytics environment, while leveraging their investment in Informatica skills, resources, and pre-existing development. Their goal is to, one day, become a cloud-only enterprise, with Snowflake and Informatica.

3. Born in the Cloud

Finally, some of our fastest-growing customers are realizing that to further enable their growth and remain competitive, they must truly become data-centric. Towards that end, they start investing in a more systematic and disciplined data management environment to fuel their self-service analytics environment. Many of these organizations find themselves standing up a data warehouse environment for the very first time.

One joint customer, a growing successful start-up in the digital health insurance space, turned to a cloud analytics solution with Snowflake and Informatica in order to connect disparate data silos. They use the solution to rapidly curate trusted, relevant, and consistent data for their analytics initiative and ensure data compliance with regulations in their industry.

The Role of Data Cataloging

Many of our customers moving to cloud data warehouse, such as Snowflake, determine that an AI-driven data catalog is an essential element of their cloud analytics solution. The catalog enables business analysts to discover and understand trusted and relevant data for analytics. Analysts can use the catalog’s Google-like semantic search to find data and other catalog capabilities to better understand it by viewing metadata and lineage next to their data.

Just as important, customers moving data assets to the cloud can use a catalog to profile and map out their enterprise-wide data assets and determine a roadmap for data migration to the cloud. This journey can take a while (as we discussed before), so a data catalog is an essential tool to chart the path based on a variety of corporate priorities and factors.
