Using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) in today’s enterprise is easy using the right tools

You’ve heard the saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” many times before. I had. But I had never had a chance to test out whether it’s true or not. Until now.

My dog (pictured below) is 13 going on 14 years old. Make no mistake – he still looks handsome and is a force to be reckoned with at dog parks, but I just did the math and he’s the human equivalent of 76 years old. So I thought it might be fun to test out the adage first hand.

My “experiment” took a while, but with patience, persistence, and his favorite treats, Chicken Jerky Tenders, I got him to catch flying treats— something he had never done before. For 12.5 yeaElectronic Data Interchangers he had always watched them land on the ground or sometimes on his head, then look at me funny, shake them off and then munch away.

Anyhow, it was a success! From these flying jerky experiments, I learned that the saying is NOT TRUE and indeed, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

So what does this have to do with an Informatica technology blog?

You’ve probably heard of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) before, and maybe even know it’s the Business to Business (B2B) document exchange standard among businesses and their trading partners since the 1980s mostly because their customers require them to do so.

Large box Retailers increasingly mandate suppliers to implement EDI if they want to continue doing business with those retailers. On the other side, Businesses also implement EDI to reduce the manual labor involved in entering orders into their accounting or ERP systems. As a by-product of automating the order entry process through EDI, data entry errors are also greatly reduced.

EDI has continued to thrive despite other attempts to supplement or replace it with other standards such as ANSI X12, EDIFACT or XML derived standards such as RosettaNet among others.

Because of the resilience, (or perhaps stubborn-ness) of its adherents, one might affectionately call it the “Old Dog” of standards in the e-commerce world. But the fact remains that EDI doesn’t have all the bells and whistles, or the flexibility to cover all B2B use cases.

What’s needed is a way to leverage the ubiquity of EDI and extend the capabilities of EDI with other relevant standards within the latest infrastructure technologies–

It’s time to consider an easier and better way to transmit purchase information to suppliers, transmit shipping information to 3rd party logistics companies, to integrate an eCommerce platform with an ERP or accounting system so that orders can be sent from the web store to the financial system, or to sell in online marketplaces such as Amazon.

The goal should be to utilize EDI and many other standards — all with one solution. Informatica has recently introduced a new product– Cloud B2B Gateway that allows businesses to create B2B integrations using EDI and other standards leveraging Cloud technologies.

This “new trick for old dogs” allows business to leverage their B2B integrations using an older, but reliable standard in a modernized, highly flexible and scalable architecture.

Coincidentally, therElectronic Data Interchangee’s a webinar coming up to get more details on the Cloud B2B subject and you can hear directly from the implementers. It’s called 3 Best Practices for Implementing a Modern B2B Integration Solution and it’s on September 27th at 9:00 AM PST.

Trust me, it will be more informative than an Old Dog Blog. Interested?
