How Amazon Redshift Helps SendGrid Deliver Data Insights

SendGrid Redshift_2When you received your Uber ‘Tuesday Evening Ride Receipt’ or Spotify’s ‘This Week’s New Music’ email, did you stop to think about how they got there?  SendGrid’s reliable email platform delivers over 20 Billion transactional and marketing emails each month!  SendGrid’s cloud-based platform  powers emails from many of your favorite brands, including Uber, Airbnb, Spotify, Foursquare, and NextDoor.   As you can imagine, the nature of SendGrid’s core business has led to the creation of significant volumes of data.  And this data can unlock important insights to drive the company’s continued success.

SendGrid was looking to evolve its data warehouse architecture to measure performance, and analyze business outcomes in order to improve decision making and optimize customer experience.  Their existing data warehouse solution was not meeting their analytical needs.  The original architecture had many limitations and was not built for accuracy, sustainability and the anticipated growth on the horizon.  Additionally SendGrid has a relatively small IT organization. They were looking for a scalable and reliable data warehousing architecture that would allow them to move nimbly, efficiently and cost-effectively while supporting the needs of both business and technical users at SendGrid.

SendGrid needed to quickly and reliably integrate into their warehouse data from multiple sources in cloud and on-prem, including, Zendesk, Jira, Marketo, Hadoop cluster and relational databases.  They needed their data warehouse initiative to support reporting and dashboards, self-service analytics, data mining and benchmark data as well as a ‘test and learn’ environment for the SendGrid marketing department.

We are super excited to host SendGrid’s Director of Enterprise Data Operations in an upcoming joint webinar, hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS), to discuss SendGrid’s journey to a hybrid cloud architecture, and how a hybrid data warehouse, based on Amazon Redshift, is optimized to support SendGrid’s analytics initiative. We will also review common technologies and use cases being deployed in hybrid cloud today, common data management challenges in hybrid cloud and best practices for addressing these challenges.
