Data Integration Is Now A Business Problem – That’s Good

Since the advent of middleware technology in the mid-1990’s, data integration has been primarily an IT-lead technical problem. Business leaders had their hands full focusing on their individual silos and were happy to delegate the complex task of integrating enterprise data and creating one version of the truth to IT. The problem is that there is now too much data that is highly fragmented across myriad internal systems, customer/supplier systems, cloud applications, mobile devices and automatic sensors. Traditional IT-lead approaches whereby a project is launched involving dozens (or hundreds) of staff to address every new opportunity are just too slow. (more…)

From Big Insights to Fast Actions with Big Data

If you’re reading this article, you’re probably interested in big data, but don’t really know what you’re looking for with big data or how you’ll find it.  Don’t feel confused. It’s not like traditional analytics, where you know the structure of the data – the relations across sources, the dimensions to build, the calculations to perform – and the reports you need.  Big data can be completely unstructured, with no clear relationships. And you don’t know what you’re looking for until you find patterns.  A complaint might come in about an online shopping cart being wiped out, which is what happened to my wife with a big toy retailer during some online Christmas shopping. I’ll tell you right now they ended up losing a lot of money. If they’re using big data, they might find a pattern of the steps that made her hit that bug.  Then they might search for all customers that had the same problem, get their e-mail addresses or names, and do a recovery campaign.  I hope the retailer is using big data properly. My wife would receive a call, and get that order. They’d be happy, and I’d be happy.

Next-Generation Data Virtualization Series Part 2 – Characteristics

So, where have I been since my last blog? Well, I have been working on our new Architect to Architect webinar series on data virtualization, which is very exciting for me as I get to rub shoulders (virtually speaking) with hundreds of industry architects.

The interactive nature and record attendance at these webinars have made one thing very clear – data virtualization is indeed top of mind. In my last blog we discussed the concept and how data virtualization is different or a superset of traditional data federation, especially as it overcomes many limitations of the latter.
