Did you know that Forrester estimates in their 10 Cloud Predictions For 2012 blog post that on average organizations will be running more than 10 different cloud applications and that the public Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) market will hit $33 billion by the end of 2012?
However, in the same post, Forrester also acknowledged that SaaS adoption is led mainly by Customer Relationship Management (CRM), procurement, collaboration, and Human Capital Management (HCM) software and that all other software segments will “still have significantly lower SaaS adoption rates”. It’s not hard to see this in the market today, with cloud juggernaut salesforce.com leading the way in CRM, and Workday and SuccessFactors doing battle in HCM, for example. Forrester claims that amongst the lesser known software segments, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Business Intelligence (BI), and Supply Chain Management (SCM) will be the categories to break through as far as SaaS adoption is concerned, with approximately 25% of companies using these solutions by 2012. I was pleased to see that Informatica has launched Informatica Cloud Express, complete with usage-based pricing. Cloud Express provides salesforce.com administrators and operations staff the option to schedule and automate bi-directional cloud-to-on-premise integration tasks without coding and without requiring a hardware footprint.
The value of this is pretty straightforward. Data integration has traditionally been something that’s very complex and costly. Most spend hundreds of thousands on solutions that become more costly after implementation than during development. The issues are around the path to good data integration, and the technology required to get you there.
Cloud-based integration, such as Cloud Express, provides the ability to access the integration services you need on-demand. Moreover, it also provides you with the ability to pay for only the services you need. This is a wonderful model considering that, while some enterprises do gigs a day in information flowing between on-premise and cloud-based systems, many operate with a much lighter data integration load. Data Integration: Your Cloud Strategy’s Silver Lining??
Earlier this year, IDC projected that, “by the end of 2009, 76% of U.S. organizations will use at least one SaaS-delivered application for business use” and that “the percentage of U.S. firms which plan to spend at least 25% of their IT budgets on SaaS applications will increase from 23% in 2008 to nearly 45% in 2010.” Great news, right? But is your organization ready? Do you have an overall strategy for “The Cloud”? And if you have already made investments in SaaS applications, do you have a plan to ensure that secure, timely, consistent, and accurate information is being delivered across these systems and throughout the business?
