If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. — Abraham Maslow
We know that learning is continual activity. To be recognized as an expert takes a long time and dedication to practice. Most people can reach an acceptable level of knowledge and skill within a few months of working with a new skill. For some activities being acceptable is good enough. Recreational tennis players don’t need to beat Roger Federer next weekend; they want a good serve to beat their friends. Experts are the people who work harder to be better. (more…)
Each and every day, we strive to create the very best product possible – not just for our clients and those who judge our work but, more importantly, for ourselves. We are all perfectionists in our own right; after all, each project we undertake is a testament to our own ability.
One source of creative inspiration that I find myself drawn to time and time again is Top Chef on Bravo. For those that have not watched; the series features aspiring chefs who compete for their shot at culinary stardom and the chance to earn the title of “Top Chef.” Each episode holds two challenges for the chefs. The first is a Quickfire test of their basic abilities and the second is a more involved elimination challenge designed to test the versatility and inventiveness of the chefs as they take on unique culinary trials such as working with unusual and exotic foods or catering for a range of demanding clients. The challenges not only test their skills in the kitchen, but also uncover if they have the customer service, management and teamwork abilities required to be the Top Chef. The competing chefs live and breathe the high-pressure lifestyle that comes with being a master chef and each week someone is asked to “pack up their knives” and go home. (more…)
Sometimes when I watch TV, even with hundreds of channels, I believe I am going to find something interesting to watch and am often mistaken. With onDemand television programming, I can always find what I want, when I want it and watch it on my own time. When I want to pause, I pause. When I want to save, I save. It is what I want, when I want it and it is easy to find what I am looking for because things are organized clearly.
How do we take that same model and provide customers with the same flexibility for their training needs? Because there is nothing like knowing that you can implement and upgrade your Informatica products on time and within budget. (more…)
During recent discussions with customers and partners, it has become clear that there is a need for practitioners, consultants and end-users to be given far greater flexibility in the ways in which they develop the skills necessary to effectively use Informatica’s solutions. As we are always looking for ways to leverage technology to make the learning process easier and more scalable, we are excited to announce the launch of our new onDemand offerings – onDemand Labs and onDemand+. If you’re in the market for a SaaS integration tool, then you’ve probably come across one or more of the following marketing messages: “Integrate in days”, “Designed for non-programmers”, “Configuration, not coding approach”… which, of course, are all messages associated with one of the main value propositions of Software-as-a-Service: Ease of use and rapid deployment.
The notion of an integration tool that has a graphical user interface, is configuration based (metadata driven), easy to maintain, and requires no programming skills is not new. Those of you who were involved with DataMart projects in the mid to late 90’s may still remember Informatica’s PowerMart 3.0 product which was the predecessor to our current PowerCenter product.
It had all those characteristics, and was quite revolutionary at the time. Its target audience was data analysts or a data warehousing administrator who had a good understanding of their organization’s data structures and business processes, but didn’t have the deep programming skills of an IT specialist. As a follow up to my Alliances momentum post, I wanted to call attention to a recent OEM partners press release highlighting recent wins with OEM ISV partners leveraging Informatica for their own applications, be they “in the cloud” or on-premise installation based. Much of my time in Worldwide Alliances is spent working with prospective ISVs explaining the benefits of taking a ‘buy’ approach versus ‘building’ a hand-coded solution for data integration.
I continue to see market evidence that also explains our momentum. If you read the interesting October 20th InformationWeek cover article entitled, “SaaS Under Stress; Integration’s the next big test for software as a service”, you’ll understand why SaaS software providers are trying to fill this large gap in their offerings.
This makes perfect sense when you take a step back and think about the moving parts of a SaaS application, namely data that needs to (more…)
