Informatica, over the last two years, successfully transformed from running 80% of its application portfolio on premises to 80% in the cloud. Success was based on two key criteria:
- Ensuring the SaaS-based processes are integrated with no disruption
- Data in the cloud continues to be available and accessible for analytics
With industry analysts predicting that the majority of new application deployments will be SaaS-based by 2017, the requirement of having connected data should not be negotiable. It is a must have. Most SaaS applications ensure businesses are able to keep processes integrated using connected and shared data through application programming interfaces (APIs).
If you are a consumer of SaaS applications, you probably know the importance of having clean, connected and secure data from the cloud. The promise of SaaS is improved agility. When data is not easily accessible, that promise is broken. This week, Informatica launched its inaugural DataMania event in San Francisco where the leading topic was SaaS application and data integration. Speakers from AWS, Adobe, App Dynamics, Dun & Bradstreet, and Marketo – to name a few – contributed to the discussion and confirmed that we entering into the era of the Data Ready Enterprise. Also during the event, Informatica announced the Connect-a-thon, a hackathon-like event, where SaaS vendors can get connected to hundreds of cloud and on-premises apps.
Without a doubt, transitioning to a cloud and SaaS-based application architecture can only be successful if the applications are easily connectable with shared data. Here at Informatica, this was absolutely the case. I meet with hundreds of Informatica Cloud customers and prospects every year. While they are investing in Cloud, and seeing the benefits, they also know that there is more innovation out there. They’re asking me, what’s next for Cloud? And specifically, what’s next for Informatica in regards to Cloud Data Integration and Cloud Data Management? I’ll share more about my response throughout this blog post.

In the journey from a single-purpose cloud CRM app to the behemoth that it is today, Salesforce has made many smart acquisitions. However, the recent purchase of RelateIQ may have just been its most ingenious. Although a relatively small startup, RelateIQ has gained a big reputation for its innovative use of data science and predictive analytics, which would be highly beneficial to Salesforce customers.
As relevant from the acquisition, there is little doubt that the cloud application world is making a tectonic shift to data science and the appetite for Big Data to be pieced together to fuel the highly desired 360-degree view is only growing stronger.
But while looking ahead is certainly important, those of us who live in the present have much work yet still to accomplish in the here and now. For many, that means figuring out the best way to leverage data integration strategies and the Salesforce platform to gain actionable intelligence for our sales, marketing and CRM projects – today. Up until recently, this has involved manual, IT-heavy processes.
We need look no further than three common use cases where typical data integration strategies and technologies fail today’s business users:
Automated Metadata Discovery
The first, and perhaps most frustrating, has to do with discovering related objects. For example, objects, such as Accounts, don’t exist in a vacuum. They have related objects such as Contacts that can provide the business user – be it a salesperson or customer service manager, with context of the customer.
Now, during the typical data-integration process, these related objects are obscured from view because most integration technologies in the market today cannot automatically recognize the object metadata that could potentially relate all of the customer data together. The result is an incomplete view of the customer in Salesforce, and a lost opportunity to leverage the platform’s capability to strengthen a relationship or close a deal.
The Informatica Cloud platform is engineered ground up to be aware of the application ecosystem API and understand its metadata. As a result, our mapping engine can automatically discover metadata and relate objects to one another. This automated metadata discovery gives business users the ability to discover, choose and bring all of the related objects together into one mapping flow. Now, with a just a few clicks, business users, can quickly piece together relevant information in Salesforce and take the appropriate action.
Bulk Preparation of Data
The second instance where most data integration solutions typically fall short is with respect to the bulk preparation of data for analytic runs prior to the data transformation process. With the majority of Line-of-Business (LOB) applications now being run in the cloud, the typical business user has multiple terabytes of cloud data that either need to be warehoused on-premise or in the cloud, for a BI app to perform its analytics.
As a result, the best practice for bringing in data for analytics requires the ability to select and aggregate multiple data records from multiple data sources into a single batch, to speed up transformation and loading and – ultimately – intelligence gathering. Unfortunately, advanced transformations such as aggregations are something that is simply beyond the capabilities of most other integration technologies. Instead, most bring the data in one record or message at time, inhibiting speedy data loading and delivery of critical intelligence to business users when they need it most.
Alternatively, Informatica has leveraged its intellectual property in the market-leading data integration product, PowerCenter, and developed data aggregation transformation functionality within Informatica Cloud. This enables business users to pick a select group of important data points from multiple data sources – for example, country or dollar size of revenue opportunities – to aggregate and quickly process huge volumes in a single batch.
In-App Business Accelerators
Similar to what we’ve experienced with the mobile iOS and Android platforms, there recently has been an explosion of new, single-purpose business applications being developed and released for the cloud. While the platform-specific mobile model is predicated on and has flourished because of the “build it and they will come” premise, the paradigm does not work in the same way for cloud-based applications that are trying to become a platform.
The reason for this is that, unlike with iOS and Android platforms, in the cloud world, business users have a main LOB application that they are familiar with and rely on packaged integrations to bring in from other LOB cloud applications. However, with Salesforce extending its reach to become a cloud platform, the center of data gravity is shifting towards it being used for more than just CRM and the success of this depends upon these packaged integrations. Up until now, these integrations have just consisted of sample code and have been incredibly complex (and IT-heavy) to build and very cumbersome to use. As a result, business users lack the agility to easily customize fields or their workflows to match their unique business processes. Ultimately, the packages that were intended to accelerate business ended up inhibiting it.
Informatica Cloud’s Vibe Integration Packages (or VIPs) have made the promise of the integration package as a business accelerator into a reality, for all business users. Unlike sample code, VIPs are sophisticated templates that encapsulate the intelligence or logic of how you integrate the data between apps. While VIPs abstract complexity to give users out-of-the box integration, their pre-built mapping also provides great flexibility. Now, with just a few keystrokes, business users can map custom fields or leverage their unique business model into their Salesforce workflows.
A few paragraphs back I began this discussion with the recent acquisition of RelateIQ by Salesforce. While we can make an educated guess as to what that will bring in the future, no one knows for sure. What we do know is that, at present, Salesforce’s completeness as a platform – and source of meaningful analytics – requires something in addition to run your relevant business applications and solutions through it. A complete iPaaS (Integration Platform as a Service) solution such as Informatica Cloud has the power to make the vision into reality. I know it’s far too soon to be thinking of Christmas, but May is the most wonderful time of the year. That’s because it’s Informatica World week and I get the chance to experience the same tingle of anticipation watching the keynotes as I do on Christmas morning just before the big reveal. “You definitely live a sheltered life!” I hear you cry, but it’s true. In years past, Informatica World has proven to be the zenith of events in our cloud calendar, and this year so far, has not disappointed.
We began on Monday, or “Cloud Day“, with two banner events. The morning kicked off with the convening of the “Informatica Cloud Product Advisory Council,” hosted by the cloud product team. This exclusive event consisted of a select group of customers who volunteered their time to speak at “Cloud Day.”
Monday afternoon’s session was open to all Informatica World attendees and proved to be a great networking opportunity as industry peers, cloud integration experts and practitioners all mingled. But it didn’t stop there. There were also keynotes delivered by the industry experts on topics such as cloud security and Analytics and Salesforce integration. The cloud momentum continued on Tuesday with some fabulous breakout sessions. In particular Conde Nast and Informatica held a session that discussed strategies in moving to a hybrid IT architecture. Informatica product management delivered a well-attended “Informatica Cloud 101” session. The day ended with Qualcomm and Inside Track hosting a lively discussion that explained how they use Informatica Cloud to manage data synchronization between Salesforce and other applications.
Wednesday was the day that kept on giving. It was packed full of sessions on the cloud path and highlighted the breadth of the solution. It started with a fantastic case study from the Weather Channel (yes THAT weather channel). They explained what “cloud first” means to them, and in particular how they built a cloud data warehouse with Informatica Cloud that runs on Amazon’s Redshift.
Next came a road map session from the Informatica Cloud Product Management team. This session gave a look at what’s next for the world’s leading cloud data management platform. It focused on the new web-based process designer that will enable integration developers to build real-time process integrations. Next, ConocoPhillips held a session called “Journey to the Internet of Things with PowerCenter and Informatica Cloud”. Conoco Phillips explained how they use PowerCenter and Informatica Cloud to aggregate data from sensor-bearing oil wells across Alaska and Calgary!
Wednesday’s packed Cloud agenda came to a close with a session from Schneider-Electric and Corvisa Cloud who talked about how they use Informatica Cloud Real Time to improve the operational efficiency of their Salesforce.com implementations by leveraging real-time data.
“Phew! That’s a lot of Cloud expertise in one day”, you say. And I would totally agree. That’s goes to show that I wasn’t lying when I said that I’m excited to hear about all things cloud this week. And I’ve only got to Wednesday. For those of you keeping track, there’s still ANOTHER conference day left.
Today, Thursday, plays host to the last two cloud sessions. If your business relies on embedding data into your own applications, then you might want to check out “How Embedded iPaaS Can Transform Your Business”. This session is delivered by RMS who are the vendors of a financial trading application. They will explain how they create seamless and secure connections between its cloud-based suite of financial applications and its clients’ on-premise data sources by embedding Informatica Cloud. They will also discuss in detail how they interface with Informatica Cloud’s REST API’s.
The RMS session should provide enough technical meat for anyone, but if not then you should make your way to the last Informatica session of Informatica World 2014 (let’s all give a collective sigh that they week is almost over. AAAAWWWWWWHHHHHH). The honor of presenting the last session goes to the Informatica Cloud product management team. It’s seems as if we’ve come full circle.
The final session is called “Developing Advanced Integrations in the Cloud” and will show how the new cloud designer helps you aggregate and merge multiple data sources, use Vibe Integration Packages, and connect cloud applications to on-premises applications like Oracle EBS and SAP. The Cloud PM team always does fantastic demos, so this session will be worth missing your flight.
Phew, what a week! Hopefully by now you’ve realized why I think May is the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year”. All sign along now… “It’s the most wonderful time of the year. The cloud team is going and everyone’s knowing it’s nearly here… In-form-atica-World. Is nearly here!”
In a recent Information Management blog post, Alex Bakker from Saugatuck Technology noted:
“There is an underlying problem facing many, if not most enterprise IT leaders and organizations: these technologies [Cloud, Mobile, Social, Analytics and Integration] have developed much faster than enterprise IT groups and practices have been able to adopt and manage them.”
The good news is a topic that was once considered the “Achilles heel of cloud computing” is increasingly being recognized as the key enabler of cloud success: integration and data management. This week we got the news that for the fifth year in a row, Informatica Cloud has won the 2012 Salesforce.com AppExchange Customer Choice Award. Informatica Cloud Integration for Salesforce was recognized as the winner in the very crowded IT and Administration category, which includes administration and IT, data cleansing, integration, IT management and other applications.These awards are based on the number and quality of customer reviews on the AppExchange. Ok, I know it’s a little late to post 2013 technology predictions, but with so many good ones published already, I figured I’d sandbag a little and not only post a few of my own but also share a few of my favorites so far. For me, it starts with Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends presentation. 2013 is going to be a year of “re-imagining” enterprise software, from social, to mobile, to cloud, to Big Data and Analytics.
Informatica Cloud Winter 2013 has arrived. This is the fourteenth release of the company’s award-winning family of cloud integration applications and integration platform as a service (iPaaS), which has now expanded to include Informatica Cloud Master Data Management (MDM). In this post I’ll provide an overview of the new cloud integration and cloud data quality capabilities. Thousands of Oracle OpenWorld 2012 attendees visited the Informatica booth to learn how to leverage their combined investments in Oracle and Informatica technology. Informatica delivered over 40 presentations on topics that ranged from cloud, to data security to smart partitioning. Key Informatica executives and experts, from product engineering and product management, spoke with hundreds of users on topics and answered questions on how Informatica can help them improve Oracle application performance, lower risk and costs, and reduce project timelines. Yesterday I attended Informatica’s first annual Cloud Connect conference in San Francisco, which was followed by a Dreamforce 2012 kick-off party sponsored by our partners Astada, Covisint, MicroStrategy and Zyme. It was a busy day, with a keynote from Juan Carlos Soto focused on the three pillars of our cloud computing product strategy, a deep-dive technical update and Ask the Experts stations for one-on-one interaction with product management. We also announced the winners of our 2012 Cloudy Awards! Congratulations to all of the winners! I’ll post some pictures next week. (more…)
