Informatica Positioned in the Recent Gartner Magic Quadrant for MDM
Gartner recently published its annual Magic Quadrant for Master Data Management of Customer Data Solutions, which “positions MDM of customer data solution vendors (and their products) on the basis of their Completeness of Vision relative to the market and their Ability to Execute on that vision.” The growth of MDM market has been phenomenal – $1.6 billion in 2011, a growth of 21% from 2010, and projected to grow by the same rate to $1.9 billion in 2012. New Year Resolutions
It’s that time again – time to reflect on the previous 12 months and make resolutions for change in the upcoming year. For me personally, the usual suspects apply: eat better, exercise more often, and spend quality time with the family. I’m happy to say that although there is always more that can be done, I usually do a pretty good job of sticking to my goals (now if only I could stay away from the dessert tray)!
Reflecting back on 2011 for the Informatica Marketplace, our resolution for the year was “Accelerate Growth” – and we exceeded even the lofty expectations we set for ourselves. Check out some of these year-end statistics: (more…)
Counterparty Data and the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) System
In the second of two videos, Peter Ku, Director of Financial Services Solutions Marketing, Informatica, talks about the latest trends regarding counterparty data and how the legal entity identifier (LEI) system will impact banks across the globe.
Specifically, he answers the following questions:
- What are the latest trends regarding counterparty information and how will the legal entity identifier system impact banks across the globe?
- How does Informatica help solve the challenges regarding counterparty information and help banks prepare for the new legal entity identifier system?
Also watch Peter’s first video (http://youtu.be/KvyDPzOTnUY) to learn about counterparty data and its challenges.
2012 Cloud Integration Predictions – Data, MDM, BI, Platform and IT as a Service
I spent last weekend reading Geoffrey Moore’s new book, Escape Velocity: Free Your Company’s Future from the Pull of the Past. Then on Sunday, the New York Times published this article about salesforce.com: A Leader in the Cloud Gains Rivals. Clearly “The Big Switch” is on. With this as a backdrop, the need for a comprehensive cloud data management strategy has surfaced as a top IT imperative heading into the New Year – How and when do you plan to move data to the cloud? How will you prevent SaaS silos? How will you ensure your cloud data is trustworthy, relevant and complete? What is your plan for longer-term cloud governance and control?
These are just a few of the questions you need to think through as you develop your short, medium and long-term cloud strategy. Here are my predictions for what else should be on your 2012 cloud integration radar. (more…)
Dodd-Frank Legislation and Structured Data Retention
The “Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act” has recently been passed by the US federal government to regulate financial institutions. Per this legislation, there will be more “watchdog” agencies that will be auditing banks, lending and investment institutions to ensure compliance. As an example, there will be an Office of Financial Research within the Federal Treasury responsible for collecting and analyzing data. This legislation brings with it a higher risk of fines for non-compliance. (more…)
Making Your Data Work for You
Yesterday, CIOs from Informatica, Qualcomm and UMASS Memorial Healthcare participated in a panel to discuss how to deliver business value from applications while managing “data deluge” – the ever increasing growth and fragmentation of data across the application portfolio. Having worked in the IT Applications area for 15 years, I know firsthand how big a challenge this can be for organizations.
We are experiencing an unprecedented growth in the sheer amount of data that can be made available. Sites like Facebook and Twitter provide exciting new insights into user preferences and habits and the move to electronic systems for utility companies and healthcare organizations means that an even larger set of information can be stored electronically for reference and used to gain new business insights. Even internal systems such as sales automation, marketing and support applications contribute to this overwhelming tide of data that can be extremely valuable but hard to unlock. (more…)

This is a key step for the Next Generation Velocity since the site is based on a flexible content management system that enables rapid publication of best practice content. (more…)
Whose Fault Is The Integration Hairball?
The integration hairball is a pattern that is repeated over and over again in virtually every organization. The hairball is characterized by an overly complex collection of dependencies between application components that is hard to change, expensive to maintain, and unpredictable in operation.
I have used the graphic below since 2001 to present a visual image of the hairball. It shows a collection of enterprise applications as boxes with lines representing the information exchanges between them. I use this picture as an example of an anti-pattern whenever I present to audiences of IT professionals about Lean Integration or ICCs. As soon as the image flashes up on the screen, the first reaction I get – anywhere around the world – is “how did you get a picture of our environment”. (more…)
Loose Coupling Nirvana – Canonical Techniques Part 2
To continue from my prior blog article on this topic, loose coupling between applications in an enterprise portfolio is an IT architect’s dream. If two or more applications are tightly coupled, then it becomes impossible to change or enhance one without impacting the other. Loosely coupled applications on the other hand can be enhanced independently with little or no impact on other systems. The net result is the ability to rapidly change the IT portfolio in response to business opportunities. In short, organizational agility becomes a competitive weapon. But is this dream achievable or is it only wishful thinking? (more…)
A Big Data Vision in an Information Economy
The big data debate is gathering momentum. Whilst organisations around the world contemplate how best to extract the most value from this data stream, others are contemplating what this trend might mean for society in the future. One example is a recent report on a study conducted by academics in the US, who used millions of news articles from sources around the world to feed a ‘supercomputer,’ charting the deterioration of national sentiment ahead of recent world revolutions.
The implications of such intelligence are rather staggering. Our world is engulfed in a stream of free information; so much so that we have the ability to predict landmarks with the potential to change society, economics and culture. It’s a futuristic vision – and one which will require a great deal of shaping if it were to become a reality. It does however, highlight the power of our information economy, and draw out one of the most important challenges for organisations – making the leap from a controlled data environment to the powerful world of big data.
