Big Data Challenges And Opportunities In Financial Services
There is a Big Data movement happening across financial services. What is Big Data you may ask? ZDnet describes it in its simplest terms as a phrase that refers to the tools, processes and procedures allowing an organization to create, manipulate, and manage very large data sets and storage facilities. However, it is not just the volume of data … it is the velocity of data, the variety of data and the complexity of data. At Informatica, we define Big Data by recognizing the broad categories that represent the three major technology trends affecting enterprises today – namely “Big Transaction Data”, “Big Interaction Data” and “Big Data Processing”.
Companies are now dealing with petabytes of data (a petabyte is 1,000 terabytes or 100,000 gigabytes) fueled by a reviving economy, rise in electronic payments, growth in social media adoption, an increase in online banking adoption, a rise in mobile banking and proliferation in cloud computing to help companies gain a competitive edge while reducing their costs. Take a look at some of the headlines: (more…)
What If We Could Do It Ourselves?
We have come a long way in the world of Data Integration. We can move data, virtualize data, clean data and control data. We can share data, archive data, mask data, govern data and act on data. However, Data Integration remains an undertaking that still requires effort to understand the intricacies of all things IT. In fact, it has been a very IT-driven practice that still, surprisingly; many believe needs a lot of hand-coding to integrate anything to well … just about anything. And, as we all know, hand-coding IS the primary source of the IT hairball that many enterprises are dealing with today and is the legacy of the 90’s IT fixation on application silos. Small enterprises and large enterprises alike all have to deal with it and significant IT budgets are dedicated to dealing with integrating data from these silos – which now include the Cloud, as well as the vast amount of social media data coming at us on a daily basis.
Why MDM and Data Quality is Such a Big Deal for Big Data
Big Data is the confluence of three major technology trends hitting the industry right now: Big Transaction Data (describing the enormous growing volumes of transactional data within the enterprise), Big Interaction Data (describing new types of data such as Social Media data that are impacting the enterprise), and Big Data Processing (describing new ways of processing data such as Hadoop). If you can imagine companies having problems with business-critical master data such as customers, products, accounts, and locations at current data volumes, now that problem is compounded many-fold with the growth into Big Data. That’s where MDM and Data Quality come in as the fundamental solutions. So, why is MDM and Data Quality such a big deal for Big Data? (more…)
On The Road With Customer Centricity
I had the pleasure this week of presenting at two of our global Customer Centricity events in Europe – one in London and the other in Brussels. Attendance was strong in both locations (we even had to bring in extra chairs in London where drop-out rates are notoriously high). In London I presented with Andy Hayler (the CEO of analyst firm “the Information Difference”) and our partner Capgemini. In Brussels I was with RealDolmen – an Informatica authorised distributor for Belgium.
I really enjoyed all of their presentations and remember hearing a few wonderful quotes:
- In most companies perception of data is far removed from the reality – reality is always worse
- MDM is not a destination, it is a journey
- IT should not lead an MDM project
- Make sure you have a good business sponsor
- Don’t run out of money half-way through
- Don’t try to solve everything at once (more…)
MDM:Why Attend The Customer Data Forum?
You will learn how business and IT can collaborate to improve customer acquisition and retention, which I bet is one of your company’s top three business imperatives.
Your marketers, salespeople and customer service reps may be brilliant. They may have stellar strategies on how to better meet customer needs and create an outstanding customer experience—one that exceeds the experience your competitors are providing. But without access to the complete customer data they need, they are being held back from achieving their revenue and profit potential. (more…)
Customer Data Forum Off To A Great Start Featuring MDM
We launched a coast-to-coast Customer Data Forum road show with visits to Atlanta and Washington, D.C., that attracted business and IT professionals interested in using master data management (MDM) to attract and retain customers.
From the business side, our guests consisted of analysts, sales operations personnel, and business liaisons to IT, while the IT side was represented by enterprise and data architects, IT directors, and business intelligence and data warehousing professionals. In Washington, about half the audience was from public sector and government agencies. (more…)
Join our @INFASupport TweetFest
It’s not the survival of the fittest anymore, it’s not the survival of the strongest either, it IS however the most adaptable who survive.
At Informatica we are always innovating ways to serve our community better. In keeping pace with the adoption of social networking, the Global Customer Support team expanded some of our communication channels to include new options of contacting us through social media. There are a number of great social media tools, but perhaps the simplest one for business use is Twitter.
We launched our @INFASupport Twitter channel in mid-February and have used this as one way to support, reach out to and dialogue with our wider community since then. We have received a number of accolades from our followers/customers for all the useful information we have been sharing and also for giving them an easier and quick channel for communicating with us. Cloud Slam ’11: The Importance Of Cloud Integration For Hybrid IT
Cloud Slam ’11 is the first hybrid event that I’ve been a part of – in other words, its both virtual and live. Naturally I’ll be doing a session focusing on the hybrid reality of today’s IT organization and the importance of cloud data integration.
I even have a few free passes if you’re interested in attending this or other sessions. (Sorry, it’s first come first serve.) (more…)
