2011 #Cloud Integration Predictions in Review
‘Tis the season, but before I post my 2012 cloud integration predictions, I thought I’d spend a few minutes scoring how I did this year. Last year I predicted the following:
- Cloud adoption will drive two-tier cloud integration strategies
- LOB-driven cloud integration projects will lead to strategic MDM initiatives
- Cloud integration platforms will emerge
- Database.com will gain enterprise adoption
- Private Cloud confusion will continue

Dodd-Frank Legislation and Structured Data Retention
The “Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act” has recently been passed by the US federal government to regulate financial institutions. Per this legislation, there will be more “watchdog” agencies that will be auditing banks, lending and investment institutions to ensure compliance. As an example, there will be an Office of Financial Research within the Federal Treasury responsible for collecting and analyzing data. This legislation brings with it a higher risk of fines for non-compliance. (more…)
Informatica Cloud Winter 2012 Announced
This week we announced the 11th release of Informatica Cloud. What’s Informatica Cloud you ask? Well according to the our 2011 “Best Cloud Management” CODiE Award, Informatica Cloud is an, “easy-to-use, multi-tenant cloud integration service that empowers users to create, schedule and automate bi-directional cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-on-premise integration tasks without coding and without requiring a hardware appliance.”
This is an important release for 4 reasons:
- Informatica has expanded our cloud integration service to data quality
- We have greatly expanded our cloud connectivity
- We continue to deliver enterprise-class functionality via the cloud
- We are broadening the capabilities of Informatica Cloud Express, our pay-as-you-go cloud service. (more…)
Hadoop Tuesday Update: Hadoop Paves the Way to Data Services
For too long, many enterprises have been attempting to sort through increasingly complex spaghetti architectures with point-to-point data integration. “They get to the point where when they want to introduce a new product or make a change, they have to touch 30 different systems,” says John Akred, data and platforms lead at Accenture Technology Labs. “That has real consequences in the marketplace for enterprises.”
John continued that Hadoop – an open-source software framework that enables applications to run across large arrays of nodes, accessing petabytes’ worth of data – will help organizations manage and scale up to the huge volumes of unstructured and semi-structured data now surging into organizations. I recently had the opportunity to join John, along with Julianna DeLua, Enterprise Solution Evangelist for Big Data from Informatica, for a discussion of Hadoop’s role in the emerging data as a platform paradigm. Big Data Have You Flummoxed? Join Our ‘Hadoop Tuesdays’ Webinar Series, Starting This Month
This fall, I have the fantastic privilege of moderating a series of informative Webcasts, called “Hadoop Tuesdays,” co-sponsored by Informatica and Cloudera, on the phenomenon sweeping the data management space known as Hadoop.
Big Data may be the problem, but Hadoop is the answer. Hadoop is an open-source software framework that enables applications to run across large arrays of nodes, accessing petabytes’ worth of data. It was originally created by Doug Cutting to support the open-source Nutch search engine project, which is now part of the Apache Lucene text-search library. ‘Hadoop’ was actually named after Cutting’s son’s toy elephant – a fitting analogy for the Big Data challenges that lie ahead.
The series kicks off on September 22nd with a “TweetJam” over the Twitter network – simply check in at Noon Eastern Time that day with hashtags #Hadoop or #infatj. (more…)
Data Integration Goes Mobile And Gets Cloudy At Dreamforce 2011
It was quite a week. According to the Tweets from @benioff, “over 45,000 people gave us a week of their summer to attend Dreamforce 2011” – a truly amazing number and a truly amazing conference. Informatica customers and partners were also out in full force as the topic of data integration was front and center in most of the keynotes and breakout sessions. Informatica announced that it’s now running over 20 billion transactions per month via its multitenant cloud integration service and also introduced a mobile administration and monitoring application that is now available on the Apple App Store.
Our session on Hybrid IT – The Importance of Integration to Salesforce Success was run twice due to popular demand and it was a packed house each time. Special thanks to our great customer speakers from PSA Insurance and Financial Services, Topcon Positioning Systems and Qualcomm. (Data) Champions Are Everywhere
I recently had the opportunity to meet with the board of directors for a large distribution company here in the U.S. On the table for discussion were data quality and data governance, and how a focus on both could help the organization gain competitive advantage in the market. While I was happy to see that this company had tied data quality and data governance to help meet their corporate objectives, that’s not what caught my attention. Instead, what impressed me the most was how the data quality and data governance champion had effectively helped the rest of the board see that there WAS a direct link, and that with careful focus they could drive better business outcomes than they could without a focus on data at all. As it turns out, the path to success for the champion was to focus on articulating the link between trusted data — governed effectively — and the company’s ability to excel financially, manage costs, limit its risk exposure and maintain trust with its customers. Cloud Integration For The Insurance Industry
Today Informatica announced that, “an increasing number of insurance companies rely on Informatica to address their unique challenges of integrating disparate data from a multitude of channels including adjusters, brokers, service providers, underwriters and other related parties.” I thought that two points were worth highlighting here:
- The wide adoption of cloud-based CRM in the insurance industry. Just look at some of the customers highlighted by salesforce.com on their website.
- The wide adoption of cloud-based data integration in this industry. (more…)
Getting Ready For Dreamforce 2011
While most people are busy planning vacation time in August, salesforce.com customers and partners, as well as general cloud computing enthusiasts, are gearing up for Dreamforce 2011 in San Francisco later this month. According to the website, “There’s a post- PC revolution underway, and your customers have moved to a world that’s entirely social, mobile and open. Has your company?” (more…)
What Will the Software Industry Look Like in 3, 5, Even 10 Years From Now?
Recently Informatica’s Chairman and CEO Sohaib Abbasi was asked to provide commentary on the future of the software industry for SIIA’s annual Vision from the Top. The paper includes input from industry leaders from SIIA members such as Eloqua, GoodData, InsideView, Intuit, Marketo, Opsource, QlikView, Symantec and Xactly. In the the paper, he outlines how “the computer industry will be shaped by the current nexus of megatrends: Cloud Computing, Social Computing and Mobile Computing.”
